Comical?
A little over 2 years ago I began a hunt, scouring the Baltimore metro area, looking for a new friendly local comic/gaming store (FLCS/FLGS). As you may recall it took a while, and I wrote all about it here. The funny thing is, I don't really read that many comics anymore. I used to, back when I worked at Sarges. Back then I read just about everything to get an idea what it was about, so I could better sell it, but beyond that I just read a lot. Batman, Superman, X-Men, Spiderman, Black Hole, Barry Ween, 30 Days of Night, etc., and everything put out by CrossGen Comics.

CrossGen? Yeah, it's a sad story in the end. They went under right around when I stopped working at Sarges. Since then I'm just not into comics any more. I still read a few titles like Knights of the Dinner Table, PS238 (which wasn't in our box last time I picked up), and Mouse Guard, but it's not like it was when I was buying every CrossGen issue that came out! It's too bad too, because there were some great stories being told.

Things on the housing front are quiet at the moment. Everyone says things are moving along as they should, except apparently for the appraisal. It was (theoretically) done on Friday afternoon, but the report still hasn't reached the loan officers desk. Supposedly by this evening (5-6pm) the report should have been in, but clearly it isn't.

The other night Tigs and I finished watching Stargate SG-1 season 1. Can I just say that I am really really impressed with this show so far? It's probably one of the strongest first seasons I've ever seen. I am so thrilled that there are 9 more seasons to go, plus five seasons of Stargate Atlantis!

Ring out the old
2007 is in its final hours, and 2008 is looking to be a very exciting year. Looking back, this past year has felt like the laying of a foundation for things to come. We've gotten things in order so that we can buy a house, I started school again so that I can begin work as an accountant this summer.

rodenthoardeLucy has made her way through basic obedience, agility, rally, has successfully gotten her CGC and is now ready to enter some trials.

[info]tigergladys is gearing up for some new things of her own, and I have to say I'm as excited about that as I am about my own things!

New Year's means resolutions, of course. I really only had one for last year, and that was to learn to play the piano. While I certainly can't claim I succeeded, I did put in some effort toward it. Especially at the beginning of the year. Once I went back to school, not so much. So now I'm thinking about 2008. My resolutions are:

  • Buy a house

  • Get a job as an accountant

  • Qualify with Lucy in an agility event

  • Read 50 books - This is a manageable number, though still a tough goal with everything else going on

  • Make progress in playing the piano

While not a resolution, I'm also hoping that by the end of the year I'll have had a chance to unpack my Hirst Arts molds and begin working on something with them. I've missed it. There is a certain pleasure that I get from mixing up the plaster, pouring it into the mold, and then a little while later popping out bricks of different shapes and sizes. Even before I build anything with them, there is all the potential in that little pile of bricks.

Christmas was interesting this year. [info]tigergladys, Lucy and I went down to North Carolina to spend the holiday at Tigs' sisters house. One of the best parts was the fenced in back yard where we could take Lucy out to play any time that she started to feel overwhelmed by the excitement of the season. I'm so jealous of her house. Actually I am jealous of the whole housing market down there. We could afford way more down there then we will be able to here in Baltimore.

My big present this year was a 300 series dremel tool and extra attachments. This'll be useful both for my various hobby activities and also for doing stuff around our future house. Plus it's my first power tool.

We also went to see the Golden Compass. Not bad. Not great, and I can kinda see where religious people could be upset, but really, it's just a movie, and not even all that great a movie. Pretty! And with some really good actors, but probably not worth the $12 ticket price (plus snacks).

Michael Bay makes me cry
Tonight Tigs and I watched Transformers. Well, that is to say she started watching it and then went to bed. I actually sat through the whole thing. And yes, there were some kinda cool things, but on the other hand, there were some really bad things. Really bad things. So glad I didn't go to the theater for this....

It's all about the style!
It's a busy busy week! I have class Monday and Wednesday night, Lucy has agility on Tuesday. Tigs and I will be a homebuyers workshop on Thursday, and I have jury duty on Friday. Jury duty means that I am going to be missing the Friday morning meeting, and that I'll have to be in early on Monday to make sure everything is in for payroll before 10am. Not exactly fun.

Lucy is getting better about the pig. We're still going to have to throw our irreplaceable Halloween table cloth, bought on clearance a year ago for the obscene price of $0.17 because Lucy has chewed on the edge nearest the pig. It was our only Halloween decoration aside from

So I'm in the mood to write, but I don't have anything particularly interesting to write about at the moment. So I Googled a topic. I found some lists, and for today's post I've picked "My Style"

My style, for those who don't know can be defined simply as "Simple and Comfortable" maybe even utilitarian. I tend to avoid things that constrict, especially around my neck. This does not necessarily include ties, as long as the shirt I wear under the tie doesn't have a tight collar. I like to wear clothing that isn't a walking bill board for a company, unless it's a company that I actually like. So you wont see any Nike swishes or anything like that. I also tend toward clothing that's not cluttered up with designs, or stripes, or unnecessary flourishes. A typical late fall through early spring outfit for me would be a solid color t-shirt and black slacks or jeans (also black). During the summer the slacks/jeans get replaced very quickly with earth tone shorts. I avoid yellow, as it makes me look like a Simpson's character, or that I've killed my liver. I tend to wear a lot of greens or blues, though I do like red and rust-orange as well.

This is actually a timely topic to have picked, as last night Virginia and I watched several of the videos submitted to and rejected by Project Runway. Oh man! Some... no, most of them were terrible! When you have 120 seconds to make yourself, your talents, and your skills stand out why would you spend your time talking about your family, including the grandmother with the lazy eye?

Also people, write a script! This is your chance to edit yourself to sound good! Get rid of the "uhhh" and the "umm" and for heaven's sake don't babble!

Lighting, use some!

Everyone goes to Paris . No one cares that you went too. And if it inspired your "black" collection, just give up on life.

It"s not a shock that the camera showed up, don"t pretend it is. It"s not original.

SHOW YOUR WORK! This is true in math class as well. Sure we could spend all the time looking at you talking, but really we want to see your work. Show us your clothing, your sketches, your models (with your clothing on). Do not introduce us to your dog, your friend, or your sewing machine. In fact you should probably be embarrassed about your sewing machine.

So you're all astronauts on some sort of... star trek?
It’s been a while since I’ve done a review post, so I’ve got a bit of catching up to do.

Farscape – Season 1
I’ve been in a sci-fi mood lately, and I wanted something a little darker then Trek tends to be. I’ve had season 1 for a while now, and I’ve seen most of it, but during the 2 weekends Virginia was away and I was doing all that painting, I ploughed through it. There is some really good stuff too. The characters were well written, the stories logical. It actually reminds me a lot of a RPG. Where else would you get a lost terran astronaut, a disgraced warrior with a sword/gun, a sexy blue priestess with psychic powers, a deposed emperor who stands no taller then 2 feet, and a captured military fighter pilot? All are on board a living starship, almost all are escaped prisoners, and on the run. Can you see the story potential here? Jim Henson’s puppets really bring the show to life. Ok, so sometimes the aliens suffer from the bumpy forehead/painted skin syndrome that afflicted Star Trek, but that’s really a small quibble.

Frank Herbert’s Dune (sci-fi channel miniseries)
Not bad. I like how it expands on the plot points that were almost completely ignored in the original movie. However I do wish I could take the 2 and squash them together into one really good movie.

Star Trek First Contact
The Enterprise travels back in time to right before mankind’s first warp flight in order to stop the Borg from changing history. Good stuff! Some fun extra features on the DVD too.

Hot Fuzz
Wow. I was not expecting what I got with this movie. It’s a British film about a super-cop who’s making everyone else in London look bad, so they transfer him out to a rural village. Only this little village has a deep dark secret. This movie isn’t exactly a spoof movie, but it also doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s also not a comedy either, not exactly. And even though I have a hard time telling you what type of movie it is, I can tell you that it was very good!

Volver
Another good movie that’s hard to explain. Just go read about it here.

Keeping Mum
You know Mary Poppins? Well, this retelling of the ‘nanny comes to rescue the family’ story does it with a dark twist.

Happy FY08!!
Can you believe the year is already over half over? My first accounting class finishes NEXT WEEK!! So far though its going really well. I scored a perfect 100 on my first test, and a mostly respectable 96% on the second. Monday the 3rd test is due, as well as the big project. Then Wednesday the 11th is the final, and that’s it!! (Clearly, by “that’s it” I mean accounting 102 starts the following Monday)

Ants! The struggle continues, and it would probably be easier if we didn’t have certain people in the house who have no qualms about leaving food and waste out for them to eat. No names, but they are both more furry then I am. As it is though we’ve avoided the worst of it so far, and we kill any we see on sight.

I got a surprise refund in the mail. Way back when we first moved in, BGE wanted a deposit to start service. Now, I know they “said” deposit, but I heard “fee.” So I paid it and promptly forgot about it. 12+ months later a check arrives! Awesome! That went straight into the bank, and is now earning interest. Now if only it was enough to really invest. Every bit helps though.

On Saturday Tigs and I treated ourselves to a dinner out, and not the dollar menu drive through. We went to TGI Friday’s
and ended up spending (with tip) $75. There wasn’t any guilt either, and do you know why? The last time we went out to dinner, and didn’t use a gift certificate was when we were living in Worcester , and I can’t remember ever spending that much on just a dinner. Can you guess how full we were?

I had fried mac & cheese (not bad, probably wont get it again), Caesar salad, 10oz steak w/ cheddar mashed potatoes, and their brownie & ice cream dessert. Tigs enjoyed mozzarella sticks, portabello mushroom sandwich, and a couple of their fruity (raspberry?) margaritas. We both had a cup of coffee at the end. Totally worth every penny! Our waiter was in hell though. You could tell that he was really too smart for a job there, and all his bubbly co-workers made him want to just walk out, and in spite of that he was a fantastic waiter! All in all a very nice dining experience and a good segue into the previous weekend’s fun activity, the movie Waitress.

We grabbed two of those free movie tickets I get for giving blood, and went to the Columbia mall. We arrived early, and after getting our tickets we decided to visit the Temple of Consumerism itself. I have never been much of a mall rat and in the year or so since I last walked around one that hasn’t changed.

Waitress was really good, and it was cool to see Andy Griffith on the screen again. I must warn you though, the pies are going to have your mouth watering throughout the movie! If you bake, make sure you have access to all the ingredients to make your favorite. If you don’t bake, get one before the movie, so it’ll be there to eat after!

Dark Matter & Fluffy Thoughts
I don’t know what it is exactly, but it sure makes for a beautiful picture.

So does this one. ;-D

So Jerry Falwell has gone to meet his creator. For his sake I hope his god is more forgiving then he was.

I’m in need of doing a [info]bookwyrm_lair post, though not a desperate need. Honestly my reading habits for the last couple of weeks have been kind of slacking. I still read at lunch, but I haven’t been reading at night or on the weekends. The weekends have been too busy to really get any reading in.

Monday night Tigs and I watched Guys and Balls. It’s a movie about a young German football player who is gay, and when he loses a big game and his football mates catch him kissing another guy, they kick him off the team. He vows to put together a gay football team and meet them on the field. Not knowing any gay football players he takes off to visit his sister in the city, and begins to put together a team of some interesting characters. Just about every gay stereotype struts it’s way into the movie, but it’s done so earnestly and with humor that it can’t be seen as offensive. The one thing that kept throwing me off was the music. Why, in a German film, was all the music in English? Aside from that, I thought this was an entertaining flick, and one that you should check out!

Aside from that, we’ve been watching a lot of fluff lately. Charmed, Gilmore Girls, Star Trek Voyager, As Time Goes By, etc. Neither of us has been much in the mood for anything too heavy, depressing, or even thought provoking. Of course I say that and sitting on the TV is Children of Men, which I’m really looking forward to seeing.

Sometime either late this week, or early next week Tigs and I are going to try to catch Spider-Man 3. It’s convenient that I get free movie tickets for giving blood. Which reminds me, I need to sign up for an appointment to do that again.

10 on Saturday, HRH, and Wyrd Sisters!
If you were throwing an 80s themed slumber party...
1. What movies would you show? The Breakfast Club, Goonies, Karate Kid, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, TMNT, Some Assembly Required
2. What kind of food would you serve? Pizza, cheese curls, Tab soda(do they still make this?), I wasn't ever that big on specific 80's food.
3. Which childhood friends and crushes would you reminisce about? I probably wouldn't
4. Which trends and fads would you lament most? Most of them! There were some really awful ones!
5. What board or card games would you incorporate? While not from the 80s Apples to Apples would be up there.

Tex
1. Whether you’ve ever been there or not, what are your thoughts on Texas ? I wish they would secede and be their own country again. It would make everyone happier.
2. Who was the last person you sent a text message to? If you’ve never sent someone a text message, is there some reason? Tigs. Actually I don’t think I’ve ever sent a text message to anyone else.
3. Who’s usually the first person you go to when you have a tech-related problem, especially for computers? Tigs if I’m at home, the IT helpdesk if I’m at work.
4. What was the best textbook you were ever assigned? Medieval Machine - The Industrial Revolution of the Middle Ages by Jean Gimpel
5. What are your thoughts on techno music? Um, it has it’s place, but it’s not on my playlist. I don’t think I even have any techno actually….

Thursday night, in honor of HRH’s visit to Jamestown [info]tigergladys, Lucymonster, and I watched The Queen. Now as something of an Anglophile I thought that the movie was fair to most, if not all, of the parties shown. I’m rather curious just how accurate it is. My guess is that it’s very accurate. I also wonder what the Queen thought of it.

We’ve also been watching Charmed. I’d seen an episode here and there before, but we borrowed the boxed sets from my aunt, and have been working our way through them. Now this is a series that has serious potential for the monster of the day/power of the day syndrome, where they exponentially gain new and more powerful magic that immediately renders last weeks new power useless. However so far (middle of season 4) that has yet to happen. In fact the series (thankfully) spends more time exploring the relationships of the characters in the context of all the supernatural stuff going on around them. I even felt that they handled the loss of Shannen Doherty really well all things considered. At the beginning of season 4 it definitely felt like they were scrambling, but now in the middle of it they seemed to have regained their footing.

Showered, shaved, now time for coffee, and then we take Lucy to the vets. Have a great day everyone!

Can you do the math?
One of the big reasons I took the job I’m in currently is the education allowance. I have always wanted and expected to further my education beyond a bachelors degree. I wasn’t ever sure where I would go, or what I would do. I supposed I would figure out what program I’d go into when I got there. For a while I thought I would go to law school. As much as I think I would enjoy law school, I don’t think I would enjoy law, and in the end the goal is to be able to be employed in something I’ll enjoy doing. In looking for alternatives Tigergladys wisely pointed out that I’m good at math, and have a certain enjoyment in dealing with sums of money. Then again, who doesn’t enjoy sums of money? So I began investigating the possibility of becoming an accountant. Ok, yeah, a bean counter. But there are a lot of perks to being an accountant, and if you take it further and become a CPA, the perks just get better. The sister of my Uncle (by marriage) is a CPA who owns her own firm, and pulls in something like 1.5 million every year. Not bad... Hell, I'd be more then thrilled at a tenth of that!

In order to become a CPA there are a number of hoops to jump through. These include 2,000 hours of accounting experience (about a year as an accountant) and 60 credits in accounting and related subjects. If I can take 1 course every semester, plus 2 over the summer, and 1 during the winter I can breeze through 60 credits in 4 years. That’s presuming none of the courses I’ve already had will count towards that total, and that only one night course is offered per term. However in about a year I can accomplish a goal of about 18 credits, which is enough to get an accounting certificate, which would open a variety of accounting positions to me.

Five on Friday... last Friday... written Tuesday...

1. If you accidentally bump into someone, do you say anything?

I usually say “excuse me.”

2. When you get into a disagreement or fight, how often are you the first to apologize?

I’m not sure. I think it depends on who I’m fighting with.

3. What everyday actions do feel should warrant an apology?

In general only if you screw something up. Most everyday actions don’t need an apology.

4. Do you apologize for things that aren't your fault?

No.

5. When was the last time you apologized to someone?

This morning. I’ve been restless at night, and it’s been disturbing Tigs’ sleep and has caused Lucymonster to stop sleeping on the bed with us. I’ve kicked her off the bed (literally) a couple of times, and now she’s afraid to come on to the bed at night if I’m in it… L

This weekend was incredibly relaxing. Saturday started (or didn’t) by sleeping in late. We eventually got up, hit Duncan Donuts with some free coffee coupons and a gift certificate and took Lucy to go visit a dog park down in Ann Arundal county, and then found another down in Howard county that requires a membership. We’d go ahead and get one, except that their membership year runs from June to June. Or was it July to July? Either way we would have to pay for a full year for a couple of months worth of membership.

Aside from that, we relaxed, watched some Boston Legal, and I went grocery shopping. It was busy because there was a “winter storm warning” starting that night and going through Sunday. I can’t tell you how excited I was about this storm! It was the perfect excuse to have a totally lazy day. Obviously we couldn’t go anywhere (not that we had any invites), and just enjoy ourselves.

The most exciting thing for me was playing D&D with Tigs. It’s been something that’s been lurking in my head for a while now, and I’d been doing some refreshing on the rules to get ready for it. Getting into the mind set to role-play has been harder then remembering all the rules. We didn’t play a long game, as some kobolds hurt her only slightly less then she hurt them.

Reviews
Real Women Have Curves 6/6
This was even better then I thought it would be. It’s about a Mexican-American teen in LA who wants to continue her education past high school while her mother wants her to go to work in her sisters sewing factory/sweat shop. Guess where she ends up?

Greenfingers 5/6
Who’d have thought that a British prison would grow some unlikely gardeners? This true (or at least based on a true) story about a group of inmates who develop a work program based on gardening that leads them to the most prestigious gardening competition in the UK.

Kinky Boots 5/6
What’s a cross-dresser to do? Womens shoes were never meant to support the weight of a man. What’s a young man to do when he inherits a failing shoe factory? It is an odd coupling, a little predictable in plot, but definitely worth putting on your netflix list!

There is no title, no name, no word to define what is to come...
except perhaps "Review"!

Little Miss Sunshine – I heard a NPR interview with Greg Kinnear when this movie first came out, and it sounded great. The premise is really simple, but the characters aren’t.
Olive is a little girl with a dream: winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true, but they are so burdened with their own quirks, neuroses, and problems that they can barely make it through a day without some disaster befalling them. Olive's father Richard is a flop as a motivational speaker, and is barely on speaking terms with her mother. Her uncle Frank, a renowned Proust scholar, has attempted suicide following an unsuccessful romance with a male graduate student. Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence, which allows him to escape somewhat from the family whose very presence torments him. And Olive's grandfather is a ne'er-do-well with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in far off California. (stolen from IMDB)

This is a disaster movie of the best type, a personal one! There is nothing here that’s earth shaking, there are no special effects, and each character is so true, and that really makes this kinda dark comedy one that is absolutely worth watching!

My Name is Earl – Ok, so I’ve actually only watched the first disk, but has this show got it! Funny stories, witty writers, and a cast that can make it all work! I hope the series continues as strongly as it has started. And to completely dork out, this is how in role-playing games (the other RPG) alignment change should be!

Pirates of the Caribbean II – Not as bad as I had expected it to be. Ok, yeah, it’s movie 2 out of 3, and it shows. Yes it recycled some gags, and no, I don’t know why Davey Jones is an Illithid with a lobster claw. I wish I had seen it in the theater, if only because it is a very dark movie, and even with the brightness and contrast turned up it was hard to see anything in some scenes. Aside from that, it was enjoyable, and it was good enough that at the end of the film, if I had PotC III I’d have popped it right in!

Superman Returns – Ouch. Recently there have been a number of solid comic book movies: Spiderman, Batman, Sin City, Daredevil, even the Fantastic 4. There have also been a number of poor comic book movies: Catwoman, Electra, The Hulk, Punisher, and sadly Superman. Unlike the other movies on the Bad list, Superman doesn’t suffer from poor acting, special effects, or even a poor story line. What it suffers from is it’s inability to introduce the Man of Steel in a clear manner so that those who only have a passing cultural knowledge of the character can sit down and feel fully informed about who he is and what he stands for. For some really unknown reason the setting for this movie is after Superman II or III from back in the 80’s. Why? Why not start fresh like all of the other good movies did? Why skip all the good story telling that can be done with a 10 minute breeze through of “Superman lands on earth, raised by Ma and Pa Kent, discovers his powers, goes to the city to be a reporter and do good, falls in love with Lois Lane… Would it have hurt the movie any to have included that in a more understandable format?

In other news [info]tigergladys, Lucy and I all went up to visit my aunt and cousins on Saturday. Lucy had a fun adventure, and I direct you all over to [info]rodenthoarde to read all about it. Tigs and I both got a chance to try out the Wii. I played some of the sports games, and Tigs played the Oh So Angsty surgery game. For the record, I suck at Wii golf, but the tennis game was pretty cool.

I also played a few games of Lord of the Rings with the boys. We were playing the 3 scenarios from the Fellowship of the Ring book that encompass the Ambush at Amon Hen. In the first Aragorn must protect Frodo from the uruk hai. The first time we played this one we set up the board wrong and Frodo and Aragorn were too close to the Uruks, and were caught by turn 2. Frodo died a turn later. We reset the game, giving Frodo and Aragorn more of a head start. It was much closer this time. A real running battle as Frodo tried to escape. Cory and Alex were relentless as the uruks, and my dice were not kind to me in either priority rolls or when attempting to get Gimli and Legolas to arrive. In fact they didn’t arrive until almost the end of the game! In the end it was only the benefit of the Ring of Power that allowed Frodo to slip away as he was surrounded by the uruks.

In the second scenario Alex had Boromir protecting Merry and Pippin until help could arrive. In this case help was 12 turns away. Alex did really well right up until the end, but 12 turns ended up being just one too many and the hobbits were taken away, though Boromir did survive!

Scenario 3 will have to wait till next visit, as by the time we finished the 2nd it was time for dinner.

Peace, Love, & Hope

Let it... flurry?
To start this entry off, I offer you this public service announcement. It is in fact the end of January. The cold weather should no longer be shocking. Furthermore, it’s not even that cold out. I have not even unpacked my winter coat in preparation of colder weather, you Mid-Atlantic wusses. Also, flurries do not constitute a weather emergency. There is no need to stock up on water and batteries if a few flakes fall from the sky. Driving like crazy people doesn’t help either. If it bothers you that much go home, or go south.

Ok, now that that’s out of the way, I would like to point you over to [info]rodenthoarde for some pictures of Lucy making friends at the AKC agility competition this past weekend.

Still waiting to hear about the loan. We should have heard yesterday, but they had to do something or other, which delayed them getting back to us. Theoretically we should hear something today/tonight. It’ll be nice finally getting an answer, rather then just sitting here waiting. Until we find out exactly how much money we’re dealing with there really isn’t anything more we can do. Frustrating to say the least. I keep checking to make sure I have the cell phone on me, and that the volume is up. Please call, and please have good news!

Tonight is puppy basic obedience class. Prior to that will be some cleaning, and taking Lucy for a long walk. I’ll also be getting the ingredients for a stew ready to toss into the crock pot tomorrow morning before work.

Now, because I have little else to write about offer you these reviews.

Story of the Weeping Camel
The filmmaker so lucked out on this one. It looks like he was doing what might otherwise be a rather dry documentary about a Mongolian ranching family, but when the camels give birth and one of them delivers a white camel and then refuses to accept it, you have the makings of cinema gold! Check this one out!

Grey Gardens
Every family has its share of crazies. When it’s the Kennedy family, and the crazies are/were themselves rather famous in their own right, it becomes fascinating viewing. Also depressing. I wasn’t really sure what to make of this one. I felt sad for them, and while I understand the voyeuristic desire to see into their lives, I don’t know if much was accomplished here.

Dark Days
Homeless people living in the tunnels beneath New York City. They have homes, electricity, pets, hot food… it’s not what you would expect, and makes for fascinating viewing.

Ushpizin
I don’t think I can sum this up any better then Netflix, so here’s their description.
“A downtrodden couple finds hope and good fortune -- amid unexpected houseguests -- in this humorous take on religious Jews living in a modern world. Moshe (Shuli Rand) and his wife are given a sum to help prepare for the holy holiday of Succoth and end up hosting two unannounced guests (rather, escaped prisoners). The couple must deal with their boorish visitors, who reveal Moshe's not-so-holy past, while upholding their faith.”
I really enjoyed this film, even though I felt like I was missing out on a fair amount of some of the “in jokes” that are culturally based. And it’s very helpful to know that $1US = approximately 4.5 Israeli Shekels.

49 Up
Imagine if 42 years ago you filmed a group of 7-year-old children from London, and then revisited them every 7 years. This is the most recent installment of the series, and it does a good job of catching you up from the beginning, which means that you don’t have to watch the whole series to watch this one. It really is intriguing seeing how much changes in 7 years and it makes you think “what was I like 7 years ago?” The answers for this group is certainly worth watching.

New in employment news!
Star Trek Personality Test )

It’s been a while since I last posted, and I actually have something worth posting about. And no, it’s not a painted mini. As you can imagine having a puppy that was just spayed can kinda take up a lot of time. So I haven’t touched a mini since I put away the Aragorns. Never fear though, there will be more soon-ish.

Onto the News! (This was written last week, and so is more back story then actual news)

I have a job! Exciting, hua? I’m going to be working at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore !! I’ve already filled out the paperwork and done the blood test, and yet another TB test. Monday is orientation, and then its on from there. The plan then is to take advantage of their educational benefits and get me my masters degree. Then I can get me a job that will pay me enough to get a house! Getting a house is the big life goal for the next 2-3 years. After that, I’m not sure what the big goal will be. Probably fixing the house up!!

It is now a week into the job. Monday was orientation, and then I started actually working on Tuesday. It's been rather hectic as I come into the job with next to no hospital experience, and no experience with how an OR is run. I've spent a lot of time attending meetings and listening to people talk about things I don't know. I've also been going through what laughingly could be called their personnel files, and their payroll records, and trying to get those all updated. Both of these projects could take me well into the next several weeks. Lots to do, which keeps me from being bored.

Oh, and I have my own office. No window, but it's better then a cubical!! Oh, and I gave blood yesterday!

We’ve been watching The Dog Whisperer from Netflix. The whole premise is that these people in LA who have dogs with issues call up Caesar to come and help them figure out what to do. The problems are usually aggression, nervousness, boredom, and lack of dominance in their lives. Basically the dogs are treated like rational humans, rather then as… well... dogs! It’s a great series, mostly because the owners are the ones with the problems, not the dogs! Watching the realization come over the owners is always the best part of the show. Well, that, and watching Caesar imitate dogs. He has this fantastic bond with his own pack, and just watching the show has shown Tigs and I a few things we could be doing better, so we’re working on that.

Happy Endings
I had higher hopes for this movie, and for the most part, they let me down. The most amusing thing about it was the written commentary that occasionally popped up during the various scenes. They made the movie interesting. Without it, it was mostly a bunch of people doing stupid things, and mostly I didn’t care.

Five from a former Friday )

I have a stack of books sitting next to me right now that I need to enter into [info]50bookchallenge before this years challenge ends!

Anyway, off to the library!

Playing catch-up
Hi everyone! Long time no update. Sorry about that. I haven’t been spending much (if any) time on the computer at home, and work has been actually busy. I feel a little bad about it, but then I also haven’t gotten any frantic comments or calls asking if I’m ok. So I guess it’s update time!

Work
I am still working at the help desk though Kelly. I actually worked Sunday which was incredibly slow (I think I took 8 calls the whole day) to make up for missing time on Monday and Thursday. I’ll also be working this Saturday in order to get a little overtime. There are some upsides to how slow working the weekend is, all the extra reading time! There wasn’t anything else to do, so I finished one book, and made it half way through another.

Future Work?
So far this month I’ve interviewed at a marketing company (joke interview), Good Samaritan Hospital, Games Workshop, and I have another interview with the city tourism organization Monday morning. Now I love these interviews, they’re great, and it’s all very exciting. The downside to them is that I have to miss work to go to them, and then I have to wait to hear anything. I’ve heard from Games Workshop, and they just can’t offer me the money I’d need, (they offered me less than I am currently making as a temp...how sad is that?) however I’ve put in another application for an accounting position, so we’ll see how that goes.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed, as there are a number of jobs that are out there that offer what I’m looking for. Now I just need one to come through for me…

Home
Have any of you heard about this?!? This is the reason both Tigs and I want an old farmhouse on a couple of acres where no one can come and tell us “No grills on your back porch” or “Your blinds must be white” or “No satanic peace signs.” Seriously why would anyone agree be part of a “community” where they can tell you what to do with the home you OWN!! If you want people to tell you what you can and can not do to your own home, why not just rent?!?

Six Feet Under
Just like [info]writergrl, [info]tigergladys and I finished watching the series finale last night. I thought that Sex and the City was the perfect series finale, but SFU nudged the bar just that much higher. I wish there was a Star Trek series... or even just a solid sci-fi series that HBO would take on. Given the freedom, I think there would be some really strong tales that could be told.

Puppy
We've got Sit solidly understood. Down and Stand are still very iffy. The puppy class is fun, and I think it's helping her with socialization more than learning commands. That's ok, the commands will come with time. [info]tigergladys has been extremely diligent working with Lucy, and it shows.

Thanksgiving
The holiday was spent at my Aunt Kim's house. Lots of cooking, lots of playing with the puppy, and generally a good time (except for Tigs almost choking to death)... now if only we hadn't needed to work on Friday...

Soap, Hate, Reviews, Healthy food!
Written over the past week at work, in between writing about Raoul.
Trick or Treat )

Some reviews!

Casanova – Fluffy but fun. I was a little surprised at the R rating considering there wasn’t any nudity, the language wasn’t anything beyond what you see on TV and the violence was mild save for an inquisitorial torture session that was well below what you might see on 24. The costumes, sets, mat paintings, and cgi were all very pretty, if mostly inaccurate. And the pigs were very cute! If you are looking for a 2 hour fluffy love story with some decent actors check it out. Definitely a renter though. I doubt you’ll want to add it to your collection.

House season 2 – Wow! Seriously wow! There were some really good episodes, and I can not wait for season 3 to come out on DVD. Yes, I know it’s still on TV right now, and I’ll have to wait nearly a year to see what happens, but I want it NOW! So good!

Monday night Tigs and I did some preparing for the change of season. Well, I cleaned the hamster tanks and helped her sort her wardrobe. The dresser is a little full (and by a little I mean some of the drawers didn’t close all the way), so we looked through everything, and bagged stuff she didn’t like or that didn’t fit for goodwill. Her summer clothing is now all packed away, and her warmer winter clothing is all in the dresser. We also found some of my clothing that had been mixed in towards the end of packing in Worcester . This included a stash of socks, which is very exciting for me as I’ve had to toss a number of them lately due to holes in the toes.

There is a Jimmy Buffett song that starts with the line “A broken promise I’ve kept too long” This line resonated for me most recently as I’ve been trying to deal with my feelings towards old friends and ex’s, the ones who hurt me. I’ve always felt strongly that people are in general good at heart, and that while they may screw up, it usually isn’t a malicious act. But am I right? More and more I’m beginning to think I’m wrong about that, at least in some cases. You see, even after they hurt me, I still cared about them, even forgave them without their asking for it, and kept it all to myself. Now ask just about anybody and they’ll tell you that isn’t healthy behavior. If one of my friends did that, I’d tell them to stop sucking it up and let it out! It’s ok to be angry about getting hurt. Getting angry is good, it’s a release. You don’t have to act on that anger and go out and shoot people (in fact if you let it out rather then pent it up for 20 years you are less likely to shoot a bunch of Amish school girls).

So the hurt is still there, and somewhere down deep where I buried it, the anger is too. I’ve been writing letters, and I have more to go, trying to confront that anger. And the more I think about it, the more letters I add to the list. I think the letters help. They are concrete physical manifestations of my feelings in black and white. Actually blue and white, but it works the same way.

On Soap
For years now I’ve experienced a burning sensation when I am exposed to too much soap. Doing a sink full of dishes would make my hands burn for an hour at least. Showers weren’t much better. Little amounts I could handle, say washing my hands, or a couple of dishes. I was always frustrated by that, and when I told someone about it the reaction was always a look, half a step back, quick sniff, and then saying something like “Allergic to soap hua? That sucks.”

Last night though, without even noticing, I did 3 loads of dishes. And no burning! Was it a miraculous cure? No. It was merely a cleaner soap, one that is without additives. What is this magic soap? The Method! http://www.methodhome.com/ Even better is that it’s not just dish soap. It’s a whole line of products that don’t aggravate my skin! It’s amazing what natural products can do, and not do!

Another thing that natural, healthy products have managed to do is to help me lose weight. I’ve found that not only do healthy foods taste good (often better then the alternatives) but I eat less of them because my body knows that it’s taken all the nutrients that it needs. I’ll have to post some of my favorites for you soon. This is actually a well known phenomena when it comes to pet food (advice we were given often when we were talking about getting a puppy, and something we did already for the hamsters, and have for years!), however people seem to forget that it works the same way for us. We are still meat machines that need fuel and like any machine, we need high quality fuel to run well. It also helps to cook your own food, rather then rely on pre-packaged crap or fast food. Something we've learned by being poor. I'm down from almost 200 lbs to 170 without really trying! That whole lifestyle and exercise thing really works. Try running with your puppy every day and eating healthy food, and it's amazing the things that happen.

Good night all. I'm being licked, which means it's time for bed.

Work and Stuff
Unlike that day 5 years ago, today is rather cold and wet. I had actually forgotten that it was 9/11 until I heard it on the radio this morning. When I got into work this morning and turned on the radio the morning talk & music show was playing patriotic music, rather then the usual light faire, and then they did a moment of silence at 8:46 . It’s been odd, remembering that morning, and knowing all the crap that has happened since then. But tomorrow is Primary Election Day, and things shall go on, as they ever have done, as they ever shall do.

As the day has continued they are peppering their play list with more of the patriotic songs. It’s kinda nice, as these aren’t songs they play often, so at least it’s different! It’s lunch time now. I brought the pizza that Tigs made from scratch last night. Every time she makes it, it gets better! I’m lucky to be with someone for whom food has to be well made and must taste good too! Tonight I believe there is going to be a mushroom dish for dinner.

Yesterday, aside from making pizza was spent on the couch. We didn’t do much of anything, as neither of us was feeling all that great. Mostly that is a reaction to the lack of sleep and the stress of the past week. We really needed a veg-out day. We watched the final 4 episodes of DS9 season 4, Emma, & Shopgirl. We still need to finish Hotel Rwanda. I think we only have another ½ hour or so to go.

Emma was a lot of fun to watch. It actually makes me want to read some Jane Austin.

Shopgirl I really enjoyed. I wasn’t sure what to expect, knowing that Steve Martin wrote it, and stared in it. I think I would have found his character to be more believable if it had been played by another actor. Aside from that it was very well done, and I recommend it if you haven’t seen it. It felt very… true.

Lunch was good, and I finished another book. Now it’s time for another cup of tea. This morning I enjoyed Darjeeling, and now I’m going to make some Earl Grey.

Tomorrow between 6 AM and 9 PM I will be serving as one of Baltimore County's election judges. Currently however I am being bitten on the ear. And no, not by the hamsters or the dog. Don't expect a post tomorrow, but look for one about tomorrow!

This past weekend
Today is dragging far more then yesterday did. At least it's lunch time. I have meant to write about this past weekend, but it's suddenly difficult to get a lot of time on the computer right now.

Saturday
[info]silentrequiem took [info]tigergladys and I, along with [info]jainasolo5 to see "For the Glory" the Civil War musical. I was impressed by some of the songs and actors, mostly the slaves and the abolitionist. The union captain was pretty good too. The rest of it? Eh, I wasn't all that impressed. The costumes were utter and total crap. In fact tonight at Wal-Mart I saw one of the jackets one of the actors was wearing! Zipper and all! There wasn't really any plot, just songs about the civil war, and no talking, just the songs. I was hoping for something a little more... 1776, a little more story, and much less narrative about the war. Though I don't know how many people are ready for a singing and dancing Abe Lincoln.

Sunday
Montgomery County Fair, again with Tigs, [info]silentrequiem, and [info]jainasolo5. It was fun to go to, not too hot. See Tigs' post for pictures of the animals.

Yesterday
Work went very quickly, as I hope this afternoon will. When we got home we took Lucy out to the park (pictures forthcoming). She wanted to smell everything! We then went home, made dinner, tried to watch a netflix movie, but found the disk damaged, so we watched 6 feet under with Lucy sitting between us. Then we took her for another walk around the neighborhood, and called it a night.

Note to self - Charge and bring in IPod tomorrow... light rock is killing me! **Not sure where the IPod is... bother...

In which I ramble on about money, paint, and share some random stuff
The biggest difficulty about being an adult is money. There is never enough to do all that you want, and usually just enough to cover all that you need, with very little left over at the end of the month. Of course I say this but 2 months after having completed a big move, and feeling the crunch of all that was involved in that. I look forward to the crunch easing off. It doesn't help that my pay check got screwed up this week... Need to call Kelly on Monday morning.

The reason this is on my mind (aside from wanting a house) is because as I hinted by my last post, I spilled one of my inks Wednesday night. I didn’t secure the lid and when Raoul walked by… Let’s just say that my foot has an uneven flesh wash over it. The good news is that it came out of the rug really well. The bad news is that I am now down one more pot, and one I used frequently too. Most of my other paints are either almost used up or nearly dried out (yet again) or both. My dilemma stems from the fact that I don’t want to replace a couple of pots! I want to replace them all with this! Yet I don’t have $300 kicking around. So, do I make do without the colors I’m running out of? Do I pick up the few colors I know I’ll need? My inclination is to wait till I can afford the paint set, and use up the other colors I have. Should make for some interesting color combinations, and some unique looking minis!

I’m so glad it’s the weekend. This week has dragged quite a bit. Tuesday felt like it should have been Thursday, and it’s gone downhill since then. Of course the heat doesn’t help, and while I am drinking lots of water, avoiding the outside as best as I can, and sucking up as much AC as possible, it still takes it out of me. It’s only 2/3 way through July too. Plus this heat has one other serious effect on the house... No Puppy! Until the weather cools off a bit the puppy can't fly.

Constantine (2005)
Not bad. Not good either. Glad I Netflixed this one. While the acting was... standard, and the special effects we're pretty good, I found the story lacking... enough accurate and historical details. It seemed like the ones that were included were there as dressing, rather then as part of the story. Not a bad flick, Reeves doing what he does best (Whoa!), Rachael Weisz doing a good job, as ever, and a cool depiction of Hell (based on the films from nuclear tests!)

Lord of the Hats
A student film from St. Mary's College spoofing The Lord of The Rings. While I didn't get some of the in-jokes, I still found it quite funny. Ninjas, pirates (well, just one really), changing hair lengths (the film was made over 3 years), changing cast members (the film was made over 3 years), and some goofy songs and special effects rounded out the production. Yet it all worked remarkably well for having taken 3 years and having no budget. I would post a link, but I can't find one on the film itself. If you know anyone who has a copy, you should bug them until they show it to you!

Some very cool RPG inspirational posters!

What fruit needs to get married? )

The Big Date

1. Are you single, in a relationship, married, divorced, separated, etc?
Long term committed relationship

2. When was the last time you went on a date?
Last weekend we went on a hike together.

3. Describe your ideal date.
It would start with a pancake breakfast, a morning hike, picnic lunch somewhere scenic, something kinda silly in the afternoon like tossing a Frisbee about and reading funny things to each other. The evening meal would be at some place like La Lanterna Caffe on one of their jazz nights, add in a little dancing, and then maybe a horse carriage ride home.

4. Do you think dating has become archaic?
I think it is more difficult to find quality places to go on a date. Going to the movies just feels like a cop-out as compared to going to a live show.

5. What are your feelings on online dating services?
Never used them, most of them seem to be set up for sex rather then relationships. Though the personal adds are fun to read.

Keep cool everyone!

Prefab?
It’s only 9 am and already I’ve had half a liter of water. My knees hurt, and I’ve got this little head ache. Ug. I hate this heat. It’s going to be cooler today, only in the mid 80’s, and tonight will be down in the low 70’s! It’s sad that I’m thinking of the low 70’s as cool… I can’t wait for the fall…

Manchurian Candidate (2004)
In a nut shell – watch the original. That isn’t to say that the remake was bad, ([info]tigergladys says that the remake was bad) but the original was far better. The plot was tighter, the suspense was held for far longer, and I thought it was just a more compelling movie. Plus the title makes more sense!

I really want to own my own home. I want to be able to paint the walls, to have a porch, a yard, to not worry about whether I have to mow the yard, or call maintenance if something needs fixing. I want to fix it! I want to experience it all! If I want to take out a wall, or put in a new floor, or change the bathroom from an awful brown to something less offensive, I want to be able to do it! Or if I spill brown ink on the carpet, I want to be able to remove it (the carpet, not the ink!). No more brown.

I’ve been thinking about the possibility of getting some land, and buying one of those pre-fab houses, like [info]rileyrox’s mom did.

Maybe something like this?

Reviews, Minis, and Hydration
My heart goes out to those who have been impacted by the horrible attacks in India. I can't imagine the terror of having been on one of those trains when the bombs went off.

I'm so glad that there is a water cooler that isn't far from my office. By the time I walked from my parked car to the office where I work I was already feeling so dehydrated. Summer is always tough on my system. One of the reasons I have to have air conditioning. As it is in my little cubical/cubby I sit next to one of the A/C vents, and thank god for that! I'm a little jealous of Tigs for how cold they keep her office. It makes me want to move to Alaska.

Reviews
Desperate Housewives - Season 1

I didn't expect to like this show as much as I do. The writing is remarkably well done, the acting is fantastic, and in some ways it is very campy. It's narrated by the neighbor who killed herself in the first episode, and the choice of camera angles, dialogue, and acting makes it a fun and funny show. The best part though is that things change! Characters grow, develop, and suffer the consequences of their actions. A major character was murdered at the end of the first season, and another wasn't, and I am actually curious to see how that will play out.

The other surprise was how the characters I didn't like at the beginning of the show, the antagonists really, grew on me. The show brought us into their lives, showed us the choices they made, and made them at least understandable and even made them likeable!

The 1900 House

This was the first in a line of BBC & PBS reality TV shows. Taking a family (or a group of families) and having them live in the era in question, remaining as accurate as possible to the historical record of how people lived. This first show took an English family, and put them in a house remodeled to have gas lights, a coal stove, no electricity, no tv, no radio, and all of the foods and clothing that a middle class family of the time would wear. This was a very short show, considering that they were in the house for months. It was interesting watching them learn to cook and clean, to deal with boredom, deal with having a maid (once they hired one) shaving with a straight razor... and all the while learning about the time they were living in.

Frontier House

This time PBS and the BBC brings us to Montana and the homesteading that was taking place. 3 families were picked for this series; a black man (Nate) and his father (who would leave when Nate's fiancée arrived), a rich California family, and a family from Tennessee.

Nate's story was that he was a poor free black who was moving west for a better life. He would have to build his home when he arrived.

The family from Tennessee was not as rich but managed to buy an existing home and moved right in.

The California family was rich, and had hired some workers to help build their house. When they arrived it was half built.

The most interesting aspect was the dynamic between the 3 families, as they struggled with hard work, lack of food, and harsh weather. In addition you had one family's internal breakdown between husband and wife, and another's "illegal" actions, and the play between those two families.

If I say anymore on this I might spoil it for you, but the final goal for the families was to see if they had done enough, gathered enough, and worked hard and smart enough to survive the winter.

Boston Legal – Season 1 Disk 1

I caught a bit of this show at my Aunt Kim's house a couple of visits back, and last time I borrowed the boxed set. There is really only one character who I much care about, but several others who I am amused by. I will admit that the biggest reason for wanting to watch the show is because of several of the actors in it, including: William Shatner, Rene Auberjonois, Candice Bergen, and at the end of season 2 Jeri Ryan. I'm going to give it a few more episodes before making up my mind on it.

Failure to Launch

Fluff, but fun and funny fluff. The basic idea, for those who don't know, is that there are guys, who into their 30's are still living with their parents, and have no problem with that fact. The parents of one of the families hire a woman who specializes in such cases, and works to get the guys to move out. It was kind of like Hitch, so if you enjoyed that movie you will probably enjoy Failure to Launch.

During my lunch break I called Games Workshop back, and the interview is scheduled for Friday afternoon, so I'll be taking a 3/4 day.

It is now 3:10 , and I have done all the work I had to do. I expect more to arrive within the next couple of minutes, but for now, this is all I have to work on. I spoke too soon! Here's work!

3:40 - Well, that didn't take too long to do...

I've been working on painting again, which you all know. The last couple of days I have spent a lot of time sorting, bagging, and tagging my unpainted miniatures. I had several small diamond boxes of miniatures I haven't done anything with yet. Being tight on space as we are, I decided to open all those minis, take them out of their packages, and put them in ziplock sandwich bags. I reduced 3 boxes of minis to a single box. It also helps to take things off the sprews. There is lots of wasted space on sprews. I still have some more to do at the house, and some more boxes with minis at Kim's. It's truly a scary amount of minis. One problem I've run into is that I am just about out of places to keep my finished minis. I don't want to just toss them into bags, so I need more figure cases. Or at least shelf space to display them until I have to move again. However, seeing how expensive mini cases are, I am going to look into making my own. I'll probably buy the foam for them, but for the case itself I'm going to try to sew cases like the Army Transport Cases, but in thick canvas rather then plastic.

I am currently working on Shaffer's Last Chancers, which are basically the Dirty Dozen in 40K. The team is made up of convicts who were given the choice to either serve and fight in suicidal missions or be put to death. They are some of the more colorful miniatures that GW has made for the Imperial Guard.

I've also decided that when I start working on my Brettonian army, the theme is going to be the crew of the Next Generation on a holodeck adventure! And yes, that will include both Worf and Data! If I do a display base, it will include a little of the black and yellow grid, as well as the Arch. :-) Geeky hua? But I think I'll enjoy working on that more then I would just doing a straight Brettonian force.

Interview at GW
I owe you a post about the interview. Well, it went well, as far as I can tell. It started at 8:30 and went until about 11:30. It was a group interview, there were... 6 of us. We had to role play our way through a game of Lord of the Rings sans dice, measuring sticks, and even rules. We had a 100 question test on 40K, Fantasy, the Hobby, and GW's history. There was then a panel interview, and it wrapped up with having us paint a mini. We were all given a single eldar ranger, and about 40 minutes to work on it.

This is what I came up with.

Oh, and it turns out the collections job was filled already. They said that we will hear something about today by Friday. We'll see.

An Inconvenient Truth. I don't think there was much there I didn't already know, but it was nice to have it packaged so well. Definitely worth seeing, definitely worth doing something about.

Peace, Love, and Hope
